Where our photos come from

Photos on the site are published under free licences (mostly Creative Commons via Wikimedia Commons, credited under each photo) or supplied by the person or their agency. If a credit or licence is wrong, tell us and we will correct or remove the photo.

How to send a notice

Use the form below or write to our designated agent. Under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (17 U.S.C. 512(c)(3)), a notice must contain:

  1. your physical or electronic signature, as the owner or a person authorised to act for the owner;
  2. identification of the copyrighted work;
  3. the exact URL of the material on our site;
  4. your name, postal address, telephone number and email address;
  5. a statement that you believe in good faith that the use is not authorised by the owner, its agent or the law;
  6. a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in the notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorised to act for the owner.

What happens next

We remove or disable the material within 24 to 48 hours of a valid notice and confirm by email. If a user posted it, we tell them and send a statement of reasons.

Counter-notice

If you believe material was removed by mistake, send a counter-notice to the agent above with: your signature; identification of the material and where it appeared; a statement under penalty of perjury that you believe in good faith it was removed by mistake or misidentification; your name, address and telephone number, and consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court for your district (or, outside the US, any district where we may be found) and to accept service from the person who sent the notice. Unless the notifier tells us they have gone to court, we restore the material in 10 to 14 business days.

Repeat infringers and false notices

We close the accounts of users who repeatedly infringe copyright. A person who knowingly makes a materially false notice or counter-notice may be liable for damages (17 U.S.C. 512(f)).

Rights holders outside the United States

You can use the same form wherever you are. We handle such notices as notices of illegal content under the EU Digital Services Act, as described in our terms of use, and under the copyright law that applies.
